Our Hahn SLH Pinot Gris is an estate wine produced from our Lone Oak Vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands. After harvest, we first ferment this 100% Pinot Gris wine in stainless steel before aging in neutral French oak barrels. It is then bottled at our estate.
This wine exhibits notes of orange blossom, apricot, honeydew melon, and white peach aromas. A supple palate with flavors of golden delicious apple and green citrus is supported by integrated acidity and a clean, crisp finish.
Warmer and drier than the previous several years, the 2014 growing season began early in the Santa Lucia Highlands. While the Pinot Gris harvest began in early August, the grapes for this wine were allowed to ripen on the vine until late September. This extended hang time enhanced the wine’s complexity and moderated the acidity.
Unlike its genetic relative, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris’ best qualities do not benefit from the influence of aging in new oak barrels. To preserve this wine’s delicacy, the grapes were gently pressed and fermented in temperature controlled steel tanks. The cooler fermentation highlights softer aromatics, and helps maintain the wine’s clean flavor profile.
