Located in the Santa Lucia Highlands of California’s Monterey County, Lucienne Vineyards produces premium estate bottled Pinot Noir from the Nicolaus Hahn Family Wine Estate.
Lucienne Vineyards takes its name from two sources: Nicky Hahn’s middle name—Lucien, and Santa Lucia, the Patron Saint of Light. Santa Lucia is known for arriving with a crown of candles to bring light to the darkness during the yuletide and winter solstice. Her crown of candles graces our label. Doctor’s Vineyard sits just south of midway in the warmer end of the Santa Lucia Highlands. The long cool-climate growing season creates grapes with tremendous character that show more bold fruit flavors than in fruit from vineyards just a few miles away closer to Monterey Bay. Grapes from Doctor’s Vineyard make wine with great complexity and depth. The grapes were harvested September 17, 2009, hand-sorted, de-stemmed, crushed and loaded into 3-ton open-top fermentors. The juice was then cold soaked for 3 days at 45 degrees. BGY yeast was used for fermentation at 80 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit with punch down three times per day. Free run was drained off straight to barrel (35% new French oak including coopers such as Seguin Moreau, Dargaud, Jaegle and DeMercurey). Press wine was separated and in the end was not included in the final blend. This vintage of Lucienne Doctor’s Vineyard Pinot Noir, comprised of Calera, 115 and 113 clones, was barrel aged for 14 months prior to bottling in October of 2010.
Made from clusters picked solely from Hahn’s own Doctor’s Vineyard, the Lucienne Vineyards 2009 Doctor’s Vineyard Pinot is the fourth release of this wine. A bit of dark chocolate and toasty oak round out the flavors mid-palate, which come together in a long, rich finish. The tannins are focused and balanced which, combined with the acidity, gives this wine excellent structure.
