Appellation
The abundant wine region of Chile is agriculturally rich and its many appellations are emphasized by moderate climates, varied terrain and deep, rich soils: all ideal for producing world class wines. The Copa del Rey Merlot is grown in the Trinidad and Tantehue vineyards in the heart of the Maipo Valley. The Maipo Valley is located in central Chile just south of Santiago, and surrounded by the Maipo River, Andes Mountains and the Coastal Range. This appellation is warm and arid with a desert-like climate and sandy, naturally-drained soils.
Winemaking
Our winemakers worked in Chile to craft the Copa del Rey Merlot from the vineyard to the bottle. The latest New World winemaking techniques were employed to bring out the best of the Maipo Valley terroir. In the vineyard, extra hang-time allowed the grapes to reach full physiological ripeness, developing great intensity, depth and structure. In the cellar, French oak added complexity, body and flavor and our unique micro-oxygenation treatment was used to soften the tannins and create a rich, round mouth-feel. This Merlot also benefitted from the latest fining and filtration techniques which bring forth the full expression of fruit in the wine.
The Wine
The Copa del Rey Merlot is decidedly different than other Merlots made from grapes from the same region. The fusion of Chilean fruit, climate and terroir combined with the New World style of this wine, results in a level of quality at an unmatched price. Elegant and rich in the nose, with bold expressions of fruit and a touch of toasted oak, spiced notes and cherry aromas make this wine a perfect match for both entrees with a kick as well as rich, decadent desserts.
